Chickens and Eggs
Our chickens are Buff Orpingtons and Black Sexlinks.
In keeping with our land management and animal care principles, we believe that great eggs come from healthy chickens and healthy chickens need health soil. What makes the eggs from Lost Ruby Farm different? Space. Eggs from hens raised with room to roam are unlike anything you can find at the supermarket, even the organic or free-range ones. Our eggs have bright orange yolks packed with vitamins and minerals from all the grass and grubs the hens naturally desire. When the girls can't be out and about doing what chickens do, feeding on insects and plant matter, we supplement their diet with feed from Lightning Tree Farm. (See label here.) Did you know, when compared to the USDAʼs nutrient data for conventional eggs coming from chickens confined in factory farms, the eggs of pastured hens typically contain: 1⁄3 less cholesterol 1⁄4 less saturated fat 2⁄3 more vitamin A 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids 3 times more vitamin E 7 times more beta carotene 4 to 6 times more vitamin D Remember that even though the eggs cartons in the supermarket might say "organic" or "free-range" it says nothing about the quality of life the chickens have. |
